JOB SUMMARY:
A career with the Forest Service will challenge you to manage and care for more than 193 million acres of our nation's most magnificent lands, conduct research through a network of forest and range experiment stations and the Forest Products Laboratory, and provide assistance to State and private forestry agencies.

This position is located in a Forest Service unit. The position is a technical biological assistant performing routine tasks in natural resources, under a higher graded technician or professional.
This is a continuously open vacancy announcement for one or more locations throughout the Forest Service. The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs.
TEMPORARY OPEN CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT: Most positions are expected to start in April and be filled through September. There may be some positions that start earlier and/or end later. Applicants are encouraged to apply early in the recruitment process. The first certificate of candidates will be issued to the hiring unit no sooner than five working days after the opening date of the announcement. Additional certificates will be issued upon request from the hiring unit. When there are no applicants for specific locations, the search area may be broadened when generating certificates to include locations in the closest city nearby. Some positions will have varying work schedules. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time and will involve working weekends or irregular work hours. Considerable travel may be required. Some positions involve work that requires travel away from the official duty location to remote worksites within commuting distance (49 miles).
Positions may be filled as a temporary appointment up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year which can be extended 1 additional year.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

DUTIES:
Performs a variety of tasks relating to natural resources, i.e., water, land, food, plants, animals, and soils. Assignments are performed within established methods, techniques, and procedures. Such tasks might include: Independently, or as part of a team, makes browse surveys; takes and records data, counts, sorts, identifies species, and performs measurements. Utilizes topographic maps; photographs, and data that identify a variety of natural resource areas and conditions. Uses a variety of tools to collect and record data such as numbers, measurements, weights, samples, and special notes. Makes recommendations for easily identifiable corrective action, based on site survey findings. Summarizes data obtained from field collections using prescribed statistical procedures. Under supervision, prepares data summaries in proper format.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.
GS-04: 6 months of general experience & 6 months of specialized experience at the GS-3 level. General Experience is defined as: Performed farm/ranch labor, such as feeding and tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; Worked in a greenhouse or nursery moving, watering, and tending plants & performing other general labor; Worked on a landscape or construction crew; Other work experience, paid or unpaid, that demonstrates an ability to learn & perform the work of this position. AND Specialized Experience is defined as: Recorded simple data during tests & sampling procedures performed in support of natural resource-related biology activities; Assisted technical or professional personnel by performing routine field and/or laboratory tests in support of natural resource-related projects; Employed standard biological techniques to carry out repetitive, routine field and/or laboratory tests in support of natural resource-related biology projects.-OR
Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled. -OR
A combination of education and experience listed above.
