August, 2015

Wow, it's already August. For many, myself included, this is a time to unwind, relax, and prepare for what's next. That includes getting ready for Health Literacy Month in October. Here are some resources to help:
  • Health Literacy Month website. Includes an overview about this annual awareness-raising event that has been taking place worldwide since 1999.
  • The theme for HLMonth 2015 is "Be a Health Literacy Hero." Heroes are individuals, teams, and organizations that find health literacy problems and act to solve them. Find inspiration from what others have done before. Then submit your nomination for a Health Literacy Hero this year.
  • Want to show you are part of Health Literacy Month? You are welcome to use the official HLMonth logo. Also images of "Health Literacy Hero Him," "Health Literacy Hero Her," and the Health Literacy Hero award form. Please email me to request these images.
  • Want ideas, tips, or help planning your event? I recently updated the booklet, "Health Literacy Month Handbook: The Event Planning Guide for Health Literacy Advocates." Order your PDF now.
Health literacy learning continues. Here are my latest How-To Tips and Health Literacy Out Loud (HLOL) podcast interviews:
  • Helping Others Ask Questions (August's HLC How-To Tip). Experts in health literacy and patient safety agree on the benefit of asking questions. But this is often difficult for patients to do. This month's tip includes recommendations for patients, family members/friends, practice managers, and clinicians.
  • How to Find and Use Health Apps (HLOL podcast). Interview with Rebecca Schnall, PhD, RN, whose work focuses on informatics strategies for persons from underserved communities.
  • Communicating About Health with LGBTQ Youth (HLOL podcast). Interview w Dr. Ralph Vetters who is the site medical director of the Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center, a program of Fenway Health in Boston, MA.
  • HLOL Podcast Transcripts. Download written transcripts for many of Helen's Health Literacy Out Loud podcast interviews.
