JOB SUMMARY:
The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

This position is located in the Division of Clinical Services, Branch of Clinical Laboratory Services, Northern Navajo Medical Center, Shiprock, New Mexico.  The Medical Laboratory Aid position is to perform specifically prescribed, clearly defined, non-professional laboratory tasks in support of the laboratory mission.  The position reports to the Clinical Laboratory Supervisor.

DUTIES:
·         Operates automated chemistry/hematology analyzer
·         Performs urine chemistry screening procedures for occult blood, protein, acetone, glucose, specify gravity and PTT.
·         Prepares samples for analysis
·         Obtains venous and capillary blood samples
·         Performs critical cleaning procedures

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
GS-03: 6 months general experience OR successful completion of (a) a full time training course of approximately a year's duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients; or (b) 1 year of study that included at least 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or biological science.

General Experience: (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provide a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. 

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
